MK9 Concepts

It's been a long time since I posted and the MK fans out there have been asking to see some of the concept art that I did for MK9.

I was only asked to do a few and with some very specific direction, but I also took the liberty of presenting a few concepts more to suit my own taste, hoping they would want to take the game in that direction.

The first three concepts I did (Reptile, Johnny Cage and Cryax) I had no interaction with the team and are the ones in which I branched out on my own.

I had just rolled off of another project and moved right to MK9 and these were the first pieces I showed to the guys. The first version of Cryax had a face that Ed Boon pointed out to look like Howard the Duck (he was right it did have the shape of Howard the Duck) so I changed that, but that was all I changed.

The next three I did (Milena, Sub Zero & Nightwolf) were directed by the team to look like what they did in MK2. I think they all turned out pretty good, but I was a little disappointed with what I did with Sub-Zero, he was always my fav of the MK characters and I think I could have iterated on him a few more times.

These were the last images I did for Midway Games before I left. I do have a bunch of earlier concepts from different MK pitches that have never seen the light of day. I will post them when the time is right I suppose...

This weekend marks my first artist alley comicon at C2E2 in Chicago. My location is at table R12 in the alley. I have a lot of new art at the con as prints for sale including Mortal Kombat , D & D and a few of my new Magic the Gathering cards.
Also, I made an exclusive 8 page comic that I poured my soul into for five days. I hadn’t done a comic in a long time and it felt great to get back to the basics of just a pencil and a Sharpie. No polish, no Photoshop and no reference…it was liberating. Below are a few of the pieces that I did exclusively for the con including the cover of Kiki and Motorgirl. Hello folks, I promised that I would try and complete the other five characters from the original
Mortal Kombat when I found some time and yesterday I did. Here is Sub Zero how I envision him. I haven’t worked out much of his back story other than that he was a part of the Way of the Frost Dragon, an honorable secret society of warriors that were direct enemies with the ninja organization Scorpion was a part of before he was killed by Shang Tsung (disguised as Sub Zero).

Over time I will try and draw the rest of them.

Sub Zero was always my favorite character to play with.

I will have a table in the artists alley at the C2E2 (comic con) in Chicago April 16-18 2010 and have all of my art there for purchase. Come and check it out.

Hello, my last post was almost 2 months ago already. Unfortunately I haven't really had any time to work on too much more personal work because I have (fortunately!) been getting fairly regular freelance work.
The art I am posting is from the first wave of concept art done for Magic the Gatherings Zendikar release. I did a bunch of concepts for the 2010 releases that I will eventually post here. Below are only the concepts I was doing for the neo vampires. The direction was to make them less monstrous but still keep them in the natural world. The chosen direction was more tribal then what I have posted (which to me is a bit more Egyptian) but you can still see some of the below art influenced in the cards (none of which are posted because I didn't paint any vampire cards). I was pretty happy with what I ended up with even though it wasn't really used.
The art at the bottom of this post was the art that I did on site which had to be done very quickly because we had to concept a lot of stuff out in the two short weeks I was at the main offices.

A recent speed painting I did in December. I have been super into the sci-fi work of John Harris recently and I wanted to do a peice in that style. I know it isn't as clear/simple as something Mr. Harris would do but I think its pretty good all the same. The theme is that of a short story I wrote about the builders of the space elevators that I believe we should be building...

Here are some Magic the gathering cards that I have done over the past year. I have done over twenty cards and a bunch of concept art for magic which I hope to be posting in the coming months when they are released by wizards. Most of the cards I have done have been lands. I have always concidered myself more of a charcter artist but the guys over at Wizards were able to pull the evironments out of me. All that trianing from Stephan Martiniere finally paid off!

Here are the never before seen Mortal Kombat characters I designed for a Mortal Kombat pitch I made before I left Midway last year. The basis for the idea was a re imagining of the Mortal Kombat franchise from the original premise but mixing modern muti-player and dismemberment game design with the original fighting mechanic.

I also took the original character designs and upgraded them.

Scorpion as a wraith wearing the yellow blood of the demon that helped him resurrected to exact his revenge against his mortal enemy.

Raiden as a god who's feet rarely touch the ground.

Sonya, the daughter of a Texas Ranger who's sex appeal weakens her opponents while her Special Forces training kicks their asses.

Kano, half Japanese half US military bad ass.

These are the only four characters I designed and presented with the pitch. The game idea isn't going to happen now that I no longer work there. I still would like to one day redesign all the rest of the original characters if I ever find the time.

This concept was also done for a private advertiser. He is based on those ugly little troll dolls from the late 80s early 90s. Both this guy and the crock were made into 3d models similar to what was done with the 9 Li_es stuff from an earlier post.

I am pretty sure the Troll is selling used cars somewhere in Florida...its a living what can I tell you...

I haven't shown this type of art for about 10 years, since I worked for Startoons. I still get into doing some more family oriented stuff every once and a while and this is a good example of what I can do.

This is art I did as freelance a while back. The set is for an animated 3D short I did for a friend out in LA. The short was called 9 Li_es and the premise is about a young girl who's cat has an unfortunate accident and her mother tries to console her by getting her another cat that looks exactly the same.

It starts with the initial concept sketches, then the production art and I threw in a few colored story board panels also. I did all the art direction and production design for the piece (which is still trying to get completed.)

Here is some art from the Mortal Kombat vs. DC game that recently came out. I was brought in late on the project but I got some pretty good art don e out of it. The team needed still images for the arcade endings so they called on me to do them. There wasn't a whole lot of time to do these so I was able to use all of the other concept artist in the Midway concept group to help me complete them. I did the rough sketches and art direction and the team did painting and detailing. Some I took to finish. Here they are:

Here are some new posts of some art I did in 07 and 08.

Its been 3 years since my last post on this blog so I don't expect much traffic. I have recently gave a whole mess of art over to my cousin to update my web site but I haven't gotten any word that things are shaping up on that front and I decided to not to continue holding my breath. I am making an attempt at being proactive.

There is so much art though I don't know where to start so I guess I'll just start with some stuff that I have done in the past year for D&D.

This is the sketch for the Dragon Park. This was the first image I did for Wizards of the Coast.

They wanted the view closer to the ground so I did this. Whenever I get a new client there are some growing pains while we get used to each other. It can be a bit frustrating at first but it should work out in the end if your patient.

And here is the final. I am still pretty proud of it because it is the first time I was really using techniques I learned from my then boss and friend Stephan Martinere.

Since that peice I have done all the art at the top of this post. I have also been doing concepts and painted cards for Magic the Gathering, none of which I can post until October.

In Feb 09 I left Midway where I worked for 7 years. I took a job with Vogster Games and I am art directing on an unanounced project. I have lots more stuff to post, some old and some new.

Been a while since I've posted anything...been busy...doin stuff.
Here is some of it:
I recently startred doing comic covers for a freind that started a comic publishing house called Silver Phoenix. The first series [on going I hope] is called Mystery Manor. He actually had another guy do the drawing for the first cover and had me paint it.
The drawing was done by Scott Jackson. They at first asked me to redo the drawing but I thought that it was kind of cool so I suggested that I simply paint it to make it look cool.

Because this is a hooror type of comic I wanted to give this drawing the feel of those old Creepy magazines from when I was a kid. The comics are based on an actual place in Nebraska that is a haunted house during Halloween so I couldn't really change the building design. This is what I came up with:

At the top of this post is the final cover. I actually liked the one with out the ghosts a bit more but the client really liked them so I let him chose. He liked both and put the one with the ghosts on the front cover and the one with out them on the back. Hope you like...

OK I finally found the time to finish this piece. I used a photo texture for the mosaic tile on the right and I used a Photoshop filter of a sky in the background.

This is a finished exercise I started to hone up my environment skills. I haven't done a background since Gauntlet and I felt my skills getting rusty. I have some super talented people over here at Midway that are all superb environment concept artists (check out their links). They inspired me to do something unusual. I have been doing Characters for a while so getting started was a sort of ramp up. All the sketches below are my process of getting reacquainted with environment conception. I was recently at Joshua Tree NF and the desert always inspires something. The image took me about 15 hours working after work for three weeks. All the images combined took around 28 hours. I started doing basic elves, orcs and dragons in situations. Slowly weaning my self off characters.
I try an interior and mountain castle. Then a couple women, still gently weaning my self off of characters. This desert scene started appearing as I let my character side take over, I was still scattered and all over the place. I then came up with this scene with a kid or elf or something is running away into a desert tomb from a invading army. The tomb interior and one of the army tents sparked more interest. But I still didn't have the picture I wanted to do. Another scene appears beyond the tent. Once again the desert kingdom appears. I visualize the buildings a carved directly out of the towering rock formations.

I then switched the view to where I wanted to be within that kingdom. I did an initial PS sketch; I printed it out and drew some pencil details into the image. I then scanned it back into Photoshop and painted the details. I would like to color it, and one day I might....

THis is Shluck the alien without any clothes on. Very quick concept I did last year.

I did these sketches around the same time. I actually liked this alien a little better then Shluck but at the time it seemed the public liked the beefier type alien. I'll eventually work this guy up to a full painting.
